Coach

What are you up to outside of the ring?

I work at a local non-profit and can otherwise be found bopping around town taking in all sorts of cultural activities—movies, theatre, concerts, stand-up—and talking about whatever I've been watching or listening to.

What did it feel like the first time you got punched in the face?

Getting punched for the first time was weird! It felt like I'd gotten my bell rung, but it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would (thank you, headgear!)

What makes a good boxing coach?

A good coach makes everyone feel welcome in class. They'll push you to work a bit harder than you thought you could and also offer modifications to suit your ability and avoid injury.

What’s your favourite combination?

Anything that lets me land a lead hook to the head or body.

What’s on your typical playlist?

I probably spend more time planning my playlists than my drills! Most often you're going to hear pop girlies, divas, and queer anthems. Other times it might be '80s Night, Electric Circus, an S Club Party, or a deep dive on a single artist like Gaga, Dua Lipa, or Kelly Clarkson.

What kind of drills can we expect from your class?

I always try to strike a balance between technique and conditioning drills so you're thinking and sweating in equal measure. I aim to squeeze in some strength training, as well, especially for the core.

Who’s your favourite boxer or overall athlete?

The sport I watch most is tennis. Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal are my favourite players and two of the greatest overall athletes.

How do you think boxing enhances your life or affects other areas of your life?

Boxing provides a much-needed break from the outside world because you have to focus and be present in class, especially when working with a partner on pads. That mental break, combined with physical exercise and social connection, boosts my mood and my energy for the rest of the day!
