Coach

When and where did you first step into the ring?

The first time I stepped in the ring was in 2007 at the Oromocto Boxing Club. I was a very energetic 6-year-old kid, not knowing I would fall in love with boxing.

What did it feel like the first time you got punched in the face?

The first time I got punched was when my brother and I were sparring. I didn’t even think about the pain, I couldn't control my laughter. I was still a young kid, so it was just about getting comfortable in the ring.

What makes a good boxing coach?

I believe two things make a great coach. The willingness to motivate and understand that everyone learns at a different pace. But also, being able to balance and showcase that boxing is just as mental as it is a physical sport. The other thing I believe that makes a great boxing coach is students who are willing to learn the sweet science!

What’s your favourite combination?

My favorite combination is a jab followed by a quick left hook then a straight right. It is a very sneaky combo that I have grown to love.

What’s on your typical playlist?

Hip hop, R&B, and rock.

What kind of drills can we expect from your class?

You can expect lots of different styles of boxing ranging from inside to outside fighting. I can promise you it will be sweaty.

Who’s your favourite boxer?

I am going to have to go with Prince Naseem. His flashy style is very entertaining mixed with his speed equates to very entertaining boxing. More than all the YouTube boxers nowadays. Some honorable mentions are Gervonta Davis, Roy Jones Jr, Floyd Mayweather Jr, and Mike Tyson.

How do you think boxing enhances your life or affects other areas of your life?

Boxing teaches discipline and self-control. Which can affect every part of your life. I think that without boxing as a kid I would not be who I am today. It also taught me to laugh and try again when things can really suck inside and outside the ring!
