Jeremy

Coach

When and where did you first step into the ring?

Citadel boxing in Lower Sackville way back in 2005.

What did it feel like the first time you got punched in the face?

I don’t really fully remember, haha! The adrenaline was flowing and my mind was racing, yet I projected as if I were very calm and at ease…. also I kind of liked it!

What makes a good boxing coach?

Someone who is always willing to learn, someone who can simplify things when needed, as often boxers have so much going on in their head that it can be overwhelming. Adapting how you are with each individual to a degree… without trying to be someone you aren’t (or a coach you aren’t). Being that positive voice to drown out their own negative voice that may be spewing in their mind.

What’s your favourite combination?

Actually, I have never thought about it and don’t recall if I have a go-to combo, I like level-changing though so any combination of punches to the body and head will do!

What’s on your typical playlist?

A pretty wide variety. I like Mexican music as it reminds me so much of boxers’ walk-out songs. Rap such as: ONYX, DMX, Slaughterhouse, Big K.R.I.T, Pitbull, J. Cole, Emilio Rojas, Yelawolf among many others. Also, Rage Against The Machine as well as some good vibe 90’s hip hop/r&b jams!

What kind of drills can we expect from your class?

Well since I solely coach sparring drills/certifications you can expect more of what I call “situational drills” which are to get the person used to being in certain situations you may find yourself in when sparring/fighting so when it happens in real time you have some confidence that you can handle it and it won’t feel as much like foreign territory. I am more of a boxing purest so in general, I prefer more drills that are technique driven… none of that burpee and fast feet nonsense. ;)

Who’s your favourite boxer?

Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, everything about how he fought made me fall in love with boxing. Others on my list include: Oscar De La Hoya, Micky Ward, Gennadiy Golovkin, Naoya Inoue, Mikaela Mayer, Tyson Fury… sorry I got carried away!

How do you think boxing enhances your life or affects other areas of your life?

It has always helped my confidence even if I mostly keep it to myself, at the same time it has a way of humbling people and bringing people together in a special way that I call being like, for lack of a better term, a “brotherhood.” It’s the drug I chose and I am now addicted!
