Coach

When and where did you first step into the ring?

I learned everything I know from the amazing coaches at Queensberry. The first time I started boxing was during one of the trial run classes right before the gym opened. I was nervous to try boxing and doubted myself, but I took to it quickly and before I knew it, I was sparring at a “Beer & Boxing” event a few months later and loving every minute.

What are you up to outside of the ring?

I live a pretty active lifestyle. At work I spend most days either diving or doing boat work on the harbour. I love strength training, running, music, and art in my free time.

How did it feel the first time you got punched in the face?

I was honestly excited to get punched for the first time when I started sparring, just to know what it feels like. To my surprise, it wasn’t so bad! The adrenaline and focus that you experience while sparring made me block it out for a moment, but I definitely thought “what the hell? They just hit me!” and quickly moved on once I remembered that it’s supposed to happen.

What is your favourite part of training?

There is always room for improvement and will always be new skills to learn. I love the confidence I feel in myself when I can train and I wouldn’t have that or the skills I’ve learned if it weren’t for the strong sense of community and encouragement at the gym. No matter how I feel walking into a training session, the energy at the gym makes me want to kick ass.

What makes a good boxing coach?

I think a good boxing coach needs to have love for the sport in the first place, but confidence in what they teach and patience to teach it to people of all skill levels. Good coaches understand that learning to box can be intimidating for most beginners, but if the process is positive, it will give them the motivation they need to get to a point where they see how far they’ve progressed. A good coach is key to that positive process. The ability to lead a class that is as fun as it is exhausting is important and something Queensberry does so well.

What’s your favourite combination?

Jab-hook-cross. Less predictable and there’s nothing more satisfying than finishing with a powerful cross.

What’s on your typical playlist?

I’ll be honest – Pat has full control of our playlist, but there’s a good balance of current and old school hip-hop to get you motivated and in the zone.

What kind of drills can we expect from your class?

Always lots of punching whether it be working on technique or conditioning, but we like to balance that with strength training and interval work. Either way, I’ll make you sweat but hopefully with a smile on your face!

Who’s your favourite boxer or athlete?

Cecilia Braekhus – she’s a powerful and precise fighter, but mostly because she’s truly in it for her love of the sport.

How do you think boxing enhances your life?

Boxing gave me a new sense of confidence I never know I was capable of. It made me realize how powerful I can be if I set aside my doubts and put in the work. I take on new challenges that would have scared me in the past because if I can willingly get in the ring with someone who wants to hit me, what can’t I do?
